DID YOU KNOW?
Should I pump the brake pedal with ABS brakes?

Absolutely not. Apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal. Steer gradually around obstacles. Release the brakes when the car stops or you regain control.

Why does ABS work better on wet or icy roads than dry roads?

Adequate braking should be easy to achieve on dry roads due to the friction on the tires. ABS brakes are specifically designed to help prevent skids due to wheel lockup and loss of steering control due to poor road conditions.

What are the advantages of ABS brakes?

They help drivers avoid crashes by decreasing stopping distances and increasing control and vehicle stability in skidding situations.

We've all been facing driving in one of the worst winters in recent memory. So now would be a good time to learn more about using your ABS brake system BEFORE you need to use it in a situation where your safety is at stake.

If your car has ABS, the ABS logo will appear on your dashboard every time you start up. Please take a moment to read this advisory and inform yourself about this important safety feature.

ABS Brake System

Car in Snow
Many of today's vehicles are equipped with anti-lock brake systems (ABS), but not many drivers know how to use them properly. Re-read your car's owners manual to learn more about the proper use of your ABS.

In the event of a skid, anti-lock brakes rely on a computer in the car to pump the brakes more than you could pump them yourself.

How do anti-lock brakes work?

ABS Diagram

Anti-lock brakes differ by manufacturer, but there are basic similarities. Each system has sensors that monitor the rotational speeds of selected wheels when the brakes are applied. When one of the wheels starts to lock up, a control unit reduces the brake pressure to that wheel (or wheels) just enough to allow it to rotate again. Typically, this occurs many times per second and results in improved control and shorter stopping distances on wet or slippery roads.

Using ABS brakes effectively

To make the system work, apply firm, steady pressure to the brake. When the ABS kicks in, you feel a vibration or pulsating sensation on the brake pedal. Many drivers mistakenly believe this sensation signals a fault in the system. On the contrary, it means ABS is working properly.

While ABS is pumping the brakes very rapidly, the wheels will continue turning. This gives you control over the vehicle steering. In other words, you may be able to steer around an obstacle, such as a car in front of you.

Since many drivers aren't accustomed to being able to steer while skidding, they over-steer and risk running off the road. Be careful to turn the steering wheel just enough to avoid obstacles.

Two related safety tips. 1) Always wear your seat belt. It's the law and also has been proven to save lives. 2) Adjust your speed to the road conditions. Most accidents happen because people are driving too fast and can't react quickly enough when something unexpected occurs.
